Shelley Vanderbyl

about the artist

Shelley Vanderbyl is a conceptual artist based in Trenton, Ontario, Canada. In her work, she is particularly interested in aiding people with post-traumatic stress disorder, where she asks the question, “If what someone has seen can break a person, can an image be a part of their healing?”

In my work, I am interested in caring and nurturing for others. My tiny hand-painted landscapes, fitting into a pocket, become portals to other parts of the world. They are created as “medicinal” paintings, offering relief in times of deep distress.

about the residency

The Canadian artist Shelley Vanderbyl is visiting Residence Botkyrka and invites us to a talk about her practice that often deals with the nurturing and taking care of others.

In 2017, Shelley exhibited her work Doses of Empathy in the exhibition Övergångar / Transitions that was shown in Botkyrka konsthall. A series of tiny hand painted landscapes in vintage medical tins become portals to other parts of the world. Over the years, the artist has given them away to people who need them, as a pharmacist fills a prescription.

Please also visit the exhibition: Your Pain isn’t a Burden that runs 19-20 October at Detroit Stockholm (Roslagsgatan 21) curated by Abir Boukhari (AllArtNow). Here Shelley is presenting works in fresco, oil and acrylic that range from tiny to over 3 metres. In the exhibition, she is responding to situations in her own life and in the lives of others using paint to speak comfort of those experiencing mental hardships.

I brought several abstract paintings to the residency. My interactions with Abir Boukhari, Nisrine Boukhari, Muhammed Ali, Anneli Bäckman, Miriam Andersson Blecher, and Harun Morrison, inspired me to add a new layer to them. I set up a space to paint in the bedroom at Residence Botkyrka, where I could see out into the community, towards the opposite apartments. I began to add people and conveyances to the abstracts. Impelled by these new and renewed relationships, and our delivery of ideas from afar. - Shelley Vanderbyl (2020)
